GFA Interventions and policies for Women’s football since 2019

The Ghana Football Association has rolled out a number of interventions and policies for the growth of Women’s Football at both the elite and regional levels in order to align the Women’s game with international best practices. These interventions are also geared towards realizing the full potential of the Women’s game on the continent and beyond.

Here are the full details of what has transpired within the last three and a half years:

Women’s Premier League
·        The GFA has been proactive in policy development for women’s football in Ghana.

·        The GFA has fostered various interventions and practical framework for the strategic advancement of Women's football in Ghana.

·        GFA is on course to aligning women’s football in Ghana with international best practices for the sport as well as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) initiative towards realizing the full potential of the Women's game on the Continent.

·                Below are details of all GFA interventions and developments towards Female Football in Ghana since 2019.

Equipment

 

1.Training kit / playing kit provided to all 18Women’s Premier League teams for 2019/2020 season 2.  30 Footballs each for the 2020-2021 3.20 bibs- 2020/2021 Season 4.20 BETWAY Bibs- 2021/2022 season 5. Malta Guinness' Bibs 2022/2023 6. 40 Balls for 2022/2023 season 7.Malta Guinness Travelling/ Warmup Kit -2022/2023 Season 8.Technical Bench wears from Woodin to all WPL club officials for the 2021/2022 season 9.Kipsta equipment bag, balls bag, markers, inflators, whistles, mini Tactical board and 2 mini goalpost for each WPL club  for 2021/2022 season

10. 30 footballs for each club since 2020/2021 season

 

 

Infrastructure

 

1. Free computers and internet broadband device for 20 premier league clubs in March 2021 2. FA assisted in securing game centers/ match venues  for clubs in need to play in Kumasi and Accra.

 

 

 

 

Training & Development

 

 

 

1. Introduction of club licensing basic requirements (i.e., venues, coaches qualifications (2020/2021 season) 2. 73 Referees and Assistants were taken through intense fitness test, technical and theoretical aspect, integrity and CMS training- Prampram (2020/2021 season) 3. WPL Coaches capacity building outside Ghana  in October 2022  (Coaches Mallam Nuhu and Basigi were sent to Germany for training) 4.BETWAY capacity building for 20 WPL clubs in various areas ( Administrators workshop; Marketing Manager Workshp; Strategic investment workshop). Two seminars were conducted in 2021/2022 season and One in 2022/2023 season. 5. Capacity building for coaches, administrators, masseuses/masseurs for 2 years running 6. Introduced a policy to train Female coaches for all premier clubs in license D coaching certificate. 9. Introduced merit Awards for the WPL where the top 3 clubs all received awards ( prizes)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Competitions & Tournaments

1.       GHc 50, 000 for Premier League Winners and GhC30,000 for FA Cup Winners and medals.

2.       In 2021/2022 Season GFA expanded WPL teams from 18 clubs to 20 clubs (Executive Council decision)- Each club now plays 38 matches

3.       WPL has well defined Merit Awards

4.       GFA introduced Motivational Awards such as

i.            Nasco's best players' reward

ii.            Nasco's best player and coach of the month awards

iii.            Nasco's best player and coach of the season award

5.       Malta Guinness 'best player and coach of the month awards

6.       The introduction of the women’s Super Cup competition in 2021/2022 season

7.       Women’s Super Cup winners and Runners-up received prizes of GHc 30,000 and GHC 10,000 respectively.

8.       Betway sponsorship money of GHc 40,000 to each club

9.       Opportunities for club CEO’s to travel with national teams

10.   Maiden and subsequent participation of WPL Winners in the Women African Club championships ( Hasaacas Ladies F.C. were Gold Medalists for the 2021 Edition

11.   The increase in the number of clubs from one to two in the women middle league competition for Northern Region.

12.   Increment in prize money for League & FA Cup champions. League winners, Runners-up, and Third Place Prizes (of GHc 30,000 and GHc 10,000 for WPL and Women’s FA Cup for 2021/2022 Season)

13.   Expansion of the Women's FA Cup and serious improvement in the Women's Division One League.

14.   Inclusion of greater number of people from clubs in the technical and management committees of National teams.

15.   WPL Club Representatives were invited to attend the world cup in Qatar 2022.

 

 

 

Policies

1.       Introduction of stricter club licensing for women but reasonably implemented.

2.       Women to officiate women's games.

3.       A three-member Committee set up to draft a policy framework for the introduction of U-15, U-17 competitions

4.       Football for Girls project established

5.        Betway development programme for WPL Club member offered free for WPL clubs officials

6.       WPL offered opportunity to access UEFA Assist mentorship programs for club officials and players

7.       GFA also instituted the Catch Them Young female referees

 

 

 

 

 

Sponsorship / Funding & Commercials

1. 2020/2021 season -COVID-19 Relief Fund from FIFA (helped some clubs to acquire buses)- $10,000 each 2. GFA facilitated the GHc500 monthly stipend from YEA for 2019/20223. WPL clubs received sponsorship from Decathlon Ghana (1,500 Kipsta Balls), sports products 4.2020/2021 season WPL clubs received sponsorship from Melcom Ghana- GhC3,000 5.2020/2021 season WPL received sponsorship from Woodin 6. Secured Malta Guinness Ghc 1 Million sponsorship deal for the WPL7.WPL clubs received Goil sponsorship of GhC5,000 8. Secured Betway as a Partner for the WPL 9.Funds for teams playing in the middle league for premier league qualification. 10.GOG Covid Fund GHc 10,000 each club 11.Melcom shopping Voucher( GHc2,000) for each club 12.Betway sponsorship 2021- 2023 seasons of Ghc 800,000 for the  WPL 13. Goil fuel coupons for clubs- Ghc 12 ,000 Northern Sector and Ghc 10,000 for Southern Sector per club 14. Officiating fees for all WPL plus WFA Cup Games fully absorbed by the GFA.
 

 

 

 

Publicity & Visibility

1.During the 2020/2021 season WPL received publicity as follows: a. Creation of 2 Facebook accounts (WPL- Southern Zone, WPL-Northern Zone) in addition to the main GFA page, 2 live broadcast UV Solo equipment were secured purposely for live streaming. 2.WPL Twitter account has been established ( the handle provided statistics) 3.WPL Highlights produced by GFA for broadcast 4.Women’s Premier League televised live on Max tv 5.Bringing more media people in the women's Premier League by the introduction of VMOs for matches. 6. GFA support publicity of WPL with cameramen to cover matches.
