Ghana lose to Cape Verde in AFCON opener

Ghana were off to a false start in the Africa Cup of Nations Cote D'Ivoire 2023 tournament.

The Black Stars conceded in added time to lose 2-1 to Cape Verde at stade Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.

Jamiro Montero tapped in from close range to give Cape Verde the lead in the 17th minute after Richard Ofori fumbled with a cross from Jovane Cabral's cross.

Majeed Ashimeru scored in the 36th minute for Ghana but the goal was disallowed by VAR for offside.

The Blue Sharks defended gallantly amd went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

After the interval, Alexander Djiku fetched the equalizer with a fine corner-kick from Jordan Ayew in the 56th minute.

Cape Verde came close to getting the second goal of the match, but a good block by goalkeeper Richard Ofori denied Cabral's effort after meandering his way through the defence.

Richard Ofori pulled another great save to stop Gerry Rogrigues from getting the match-winner for Cape Verd later on.

Cape Verde finally got the winning goal through Garry Rogrigues - the forward capitalised on a blunder to get the ball into the back of the net.
